How Columbus City Council works
Columbus is moving from a hybrid system, in which every voter elected all nine district members, to district-only elections starting in 2027. Here's how it works and what changes.

Columbus voters approved both charter amendments on how City Council is elected, according to unofficial results. From 2027, only the voters in a district elect its council member, and four at-large seats, elected citywide, are added by 2030.

Columbus is divided into nine City Council districts. To find which one you live in, look up your home address with the City of Columbus district finder, or compare all nine districts to see their neighborhoods and boundaries.

Who is my Columbus city council member?
All nine current members were elected citywide, so each of them represents you — and the member who lives in your district is your district's representative. Starting with the 2027 elections, only voters in a district elect its member.
How many City Council districts does Columbus have?
Columbus has nine City Council districts. They were created by a 2018 charter amendment that expanded the council from seven at-large seats to nine district-based seats, first filled in the 2023 election.
Do I vote for one council member or all nine?
Starting in 2027, one: your own district's, plus the new at-large seats, which every voter in the city elects. In the 2023 and 2025 elections, every Columbus voter voted in each district race on the ballot, not just their own district's. On November 3, 2026, voters approved Issues 8 and 9, according to unofficial results, which make council elections district-only and add four at-large seats by 2030. Terms are staggered, so your district's seat is on the ballot every four years.
